Many of us might think of the dangerous places in the world as areas full of venomous snakes or hurricanes and tsunamis. Danger, however, can come in any form it desires—terrorism, unpredictable weather, and everything in between.

So, let’s get going with 10 of the most dangerous places in the world.

10. Death Valley, California

Located right on the border of California and Nevada is Death Valley, with its extremely scalding temperatures. How hot is that? Well, a temperature of 134°F, recorded here back on July 10, 1913, still holds the record for the hottest ever. Imagine strolling through that.

But don’t think the heat is the only danger: temperatures at night can fall as low as 14°F, making it a place of extremes. If you get caught in the middle of a storm, you’re in for massive lightning and flash floods that turn the desert floor into a deadly water basin. Not to mention, there is the mysterious disappearance of hikers over the years.

9. Fraser Island, Australia

Fraser Island-white sand and crystal-clear waters-is the utopian paradise, but don’t let the beauty fool you; it’s actually so full of danger. From deadly snakes-18 types, including the world’s second most venomous, the Eastern brown snake-to dingoes that have become aggressive due to not having enough food, this island is forbidden to those with weak nerves.

The waters around the island are not great, even when one avoids the land-based hazards. Sharks, venomous jellyfish, and saltwater crocodiles are common inhabitants of these waters. You make one wrong turn, and you’re in big trouble.

8. Lake Nyos, Cameroon

But this lake happens to sit on an active volcano, making it dangerous enough. But if that weren’t enough, there is a terrifying little twist-the lake can explode.

Big pockets of magma leak carbon dioxide into the water beneath this lake, creating a highly deadly cocktail now known as carbonic acid. With too much pressure comes a burst, releasing its lethal gas cloud into the air that kills anything in its path.

Just such a disaster occurred in 1986 when a giant cloud of CO2 burst from Lake Nyos and asphyxiated at least 1,700 people, along with thousands of other animals.Since then, attempts have been made to release the pressure and prevent another disaster, but with one of the natural walls of the lake weakening, it is still considered a danger.

7. Burkina Faso

Most of the places included in this list are dangerous due to their natural aspects, but Burkina Faso is different. This West African country has gone through all sorts of violence and terrorism. Such armed groups frequently attack public places, including hotels and restaurants, where locals and travelers alike become victims of these attacks.

The locals lead a hard life under the constant threat of violence, besides having one of the lowest literacy rates in the world. Terrorism, poverty, and corruption come together to make it one of the most dangerous places to be.

Tourists flocked here, now the streets are often battlegrounds for drug cartels. Even the city’s police force had to be disarmed in 2018 after it was found to be infiltrated by gangs. Acapulco is probably a place you can cross off your list if you’re looking for a beach getaway.

With many of these highly venomous vipers in every nook and cranny of the island, it is safe to say this is one place where humans do not go.
